Old friends. Ahhh! Is the feeling you should have when you think of a good friend from years ago. You should have the feeling of happiness, joy, fun, and a good feeling of nostalgia. I am a Life Coach and my belief is that you should not live in the past, always look to the future. But when having good old friends, I believe you should be able to reminisce with laughter and smiles.
I have a good old friend that I have known since the 10th grade. We have been friends for 27 years now. When we were younger, we spent almost everyday together in the summer. We enjoyed shopping, going to the town pool and then in the evenings roller-skating. The summer of ’81 is one of the best we shared. We had such a blast, that we still talk and laugh about it to this day. Its great to be able to look back on those times good or bad, that we shared, and reminisce. The reason I mention this is because, even though we shared so many of the same experiences then, we are now living totally different lives. She is married with four children and I am single with no children. Though our lives are so different, we are still the best friends we were then. We hadn’t actually seen each other in a few years, although we kept in touch. Most contact was for birthdays and to share special occasions.
Last summer, we decided it was time to meet for lunch. What an amazing experience. When I arrived for lunch, I recognized my friend even though she had her back towards me. We had almost the same hairstyle, the same type of shirt and the same big smile that we always had when seeing each other. It’s amazing how similar we are. Since then, we instant message each other on a regular basis. She is currently helping me out by editing some of my work. She is a blessing to me. I am so glad that we kept in touch and am now even closer. She has recently asked me for my advice on self-confidence so that she could start a new job. I am here to help her, as she is there to help me. And we continuously learn and reshape ourselves through this help. So take my advice and look at the good old friends you have. Focus only on that part of your past, and enjoy a good chuckle.
I believe that you should never look back on the negative past, only the good past with friends. It brightens your life. So keep those friends and enjoy those memories! She is so very special, that I will always remember those memories. I’ll say it again, that we look back with enjoyment and laughter and it helps us through tough times. We can still make each other smile even when no one else can. I hope that she knows by now that she does that for me. Its great to know that we can be there for each other in times of need. I love those memories and will always cherish them. She is my best medicine and I am confident that I am hers. As a Life Coach I instruct people to never live in the past but to use the positive aspects of it to continue on or learn from.
Remember that there is nothing more special or wonderful as the memories you share with a good Old Friend. I suggest that if there is an old friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while you should contact them now. Don’t forget to share the good times you had in the past. Making a phone call or emailing is a great way to reconnect. If you are missing that old friend then take that first step. Remember, Old Friends Are the Best Medicine.
